Lite General Tso’s Chicken and Wontons - Chinatown Garden: Washington DC

I had to grab a quick dinner before we made the 2 hour drive back to Jersey, so I headed into DC’s Chinatown for a bite to eat.

I decided to get an order of General Tso’s with some dumplings, but this restaurant actually offered a “lite” version which I have never seen before. I was curious, so I gave it a try.

The wontons were the doughiest that I have ever had. The filling was very minimal, and although the filling I did taste was quite nice, it was barely there. I felt like I was just eating fried noodles. This was not a good start to the meal.

Next up was the General Tso’s, it wasn’t fried and it looked really delicious. When I took a bite, the chicken had a really nice flavor and texture, but the sauce was lack-luster. I had asked for it to be spicy, but it was VERY sweet. Almost sickeningly so. I had to pile it onto white rice to balance out all the sweet sauce.

Overall, I find Chinese food to follow the same rules as pizza. You never really have a BAD pizza. The pizza might not be good, but it is never really inedible. So while this was not an amazing dinner, it filled me up and did it’s job. Would I eat there again? Probably not.

My Version of General Tso’s Sauce - ~MY OWN RECIPE~

General Tso’s chicken is a staple at every Chinese food restaurant, but each one does it differently. Sometimes it comes with a brown sauce, and other times it’s a tangy red.

I wanted to make the tangy red at home, but none of the recipes I found were quite right. They were all brown and savory!  After seeing a comment online about the red sauce using ketchup, I tried a few different combinations, and this is what I came up with!
It’s tangy, spicy, and delicious with rice and broccoli.
If you’d like to try the recipe, you can find it ~HERE~

Fusia Asian Inspirations, General Tso’s Zesty Chicken - Aldi

This is one of the more interesting Freezer meals I have had in the last week. The bag contains several pouches you cook and combine to make a meal for two.

Inside this bag you would find frozen pan-fried chicken bits, a bag of frozen veggies, a baggie of frozen sauce and a pouch of frozen white rice.

The directions are you first reheat the chicken in a pan with some oil, this makes the chicken nice and crispy again. Secondly you cook the veggies, combine that mixture with the chicken and top everything off with the sauce packet. The rice is actually steamed separately in the microwave. Which I had never done before. Once cooked, you combine everything and dig in.

I have to say, this is quite good for a frozen meal. The veggies had a nice bite to them, the chicken was crispy and the rice wasn’t bad for being microwaved.

For 15 minutes of prep, this is a pretty tasty meal. If you see this in the freezer section and want something quick and tasty, be sure to pick this one up!
