Meiji Kinoko No Yama Roasted Sweet Potato - Asian Food Market, NJ

Even MORE Chocorooms!

My other Chocoroom flavor reviews:

This is the last box of Chocorooms I have in my stash.

The packaging for this flavor is very vibrant. The combinations of red-violet and green are stunning. I think this is meant to be a fall flavor and design, but I’m not sure. (The Purple Sweet Potato was definitely a fall release with an obvious fall color scheme.) The box is smaller and thinner than the Macadamia version I reviewed a few days ago, so it’s more like the original Chocoroom box than any of the specialty flavors I have had.

Inside, the chocolates are smaller and not individually wrapped. For this flavor, the little chocolate mushroom cap is sunny yellow with a plain biscuit “stump.”

I was kind of surprised by the smell. These don’t smell like a sweet potato at all. In fact, these smell more like a flavored/specialty coffee to me than any sweet potato I’ve ever had.

When I ate one, it confirmed that these weren’t quite sweet potato. While there is a sweet fruity/vegetable taste, these are really more like a mild flavored coffee than anything else. Maybe sweet potatoes are roasted differently in Asia? Even though these don’t taste like a sweet potato, they are pretty yummy.

So far I don’t think any of the specialty Chocorooms I have had tasted like what they were supposed to. If you like mild flavored coffee, you might enjoy this version (my mother does), but my favorite so far is still the Macadamia.

Even MORE Chocorooms!

My other Chocoroom flavor reviews:

This box has a blue color scheme and a winter theme. (Similar to the purple sweet potato version and it’s fall theme.) There is a little village covered in snow with scatter snowflakes all over the box. While I do like the overall look and design of this package, I hate that I need to tear the front cover to open it. I mean, you really could open it any way you wanted, but the suggested way of opening it is to lift up a perforated flap on the front of the box. It always seems like a shame to rip a pretty design, but that is just my opinion.

Just like the strawberry and sweet potato flavors, these are individually wrapped, but the biscuit “stump” for this flavor is actually chocolate! All of the other flavors I have tried so far used plain/vanilla biscuits, so it’s nice to try a chocolate variety.

Opening the wrapper, I noticed that the chocolate aroma is much stronger than the macadamia.

I took a bite…and I was surprised. There were no actual macadamia nuts inside. It’s just macadamia flavored milk chocolate with a chocolate biscuit. Even without the actual macadamias, these are really yummy! The texture and taste of the chocolate “top” and biscuit “bottom” remind me of Nutella to Go, but with the hazelnuts swapped out for macademias. Overall the flavors and textures work really well together.

I really like these a lot, and these are my favorite out of all the flavors of Chocorooms I have tried so far.

Chocoroom Collage

Sorry for the lack of update yesterday. Tumblr was down and I wasn’t able to get a post up.
Today I bought 2 NEW flavors of Chocorooms, and I’ll be reviewing one later today. In the meantime, here is a collage of the flavors I have reviewed already.
Have a great day!

Kinoko No Yama Caramel (Caramel) - Asian Food Market, NJ

Sorry for the lack of updates the last two days, I just got back from Otakon in Baltimore and my queue had run out.
This is the last flavors of my mushroom-themed snacks. This time, it’s a pretty well known flavor, caramel.
The box is smaller and thinner then the strawberry and the yam versions. It’s about half the size! This time the art seems to have a snowy theme, so maybe caramel is considered more of a winter flavor in Asian countries?  I like the combination of the colors on the box and I think they are really appealing.
Inside, the Chocorooms are together inside a large bag, not individually wrapped. This is different from the yam or strawberry, maybe those are specialty versions, and caramel is a staple flavor? The mushroom-shaped candy inside is about half the size of the taro and strawberry mushrooms too!
When I smelled the candy, it was rich and buttery. There is still a very strong smell of white chocolate, like most flavored Chocorooms, but there are definitely burnt sugar notes.
The biscuit stem tastes just like a Pocky stick, crunchy and mild. This time, the coating tastes like a lightly salted white chocolate mixed with caramel. The texture is like fudge, but it melts away in your mouth.
I really enjoyed this flavor a lot, and they are fantastic when paired with a cup of tea! Out of the three flavors, I’d have to pick caramel as my ultimate favorite. Least favorite would be yam/taro, because it tasted nothing like an actual yam at all.

Kinoko No Yama Ichigo (Strawberry) - Asian Food Market, NJ

After being disappointed in the yam version, I decided to try strawberry Chocorooms.

The box is just as cute as the Yam ones, but the art doesn’t match up to the perforations well. I hate tearing up beautiful box-art to get to the candy inside.

Just like the Yam flavored ones, these candies are individually packaged. The tops are a bright pink strawberry, while the bottoms have red flecks in them. This reminds me of the strawberry heart-shaped Pocky coating.

This time I smell a strong artificial strawberry smell. The coating really does taste a lot like the strawberry Pocky, only stronger! It isn’t overly sweet, there is a tart yogurt-y tang to the strawberry flavoring that balances out the very sweet white chocolate.

I think these are better than the taro flavored ones, just because they actually taste like what they are supposed to.

Meiji Kinoko No Yama Purple Taro (Purple Sweet Potato) - Asian Food Market, NJ

More Chocorooms! This time I have purple sweet Potato with white chocolate and black sesame seeds!

After trying the original, reviewed here, my sister was eager to try more! She loves this line! (It’s so cute!) I picked up a few flavors, so soon you’ll see reviews on strawberry and butterscotch soon!

The box is bright and eye catching. Judging from the image, I am guessing roasted sweet potatoes are a fall treat in Japan. There seems to be a fall theme to the box with leaves being Autumn colors. The package opens in the front, a lot like the Meltykiss Almonds I reviewed the other day, but the layout is arranged around the perforations so when I do open the box the design isn’t destroyed.I like that a lot!

Inside are individually wrapped little ‘mushrooms.’ Each one has a purple, taro, top and a white chocolate bottom. The white chocolate is mixed with black sesame seeds. It has the same biscuit stick as original Chocorooms.

Once I open the individual wrapper, I smell very strong white chocolate. There is a slight hint of sweet potato, but it is lost in the white chocolate.

Sadly, I think the white chocolate over powers a lot of the other flavors too. I mostly taste white chocolate with a hint of black sesame. I can barely taste any sweet potato at all. The white chocolate is soft and almost fudge-y. and as you chew it melts away in your mouth. The biscuit tastes just like an un-coated Pocky stick.

Overall these are nice, but they aren’t sweet potato. Unless you’re craving white chocolate, I’d avoid these.

For the next few weeks I will be reviewing more Asian sweets! Why? Because in two weeks time I will be attending Otakon, an Asian Pop culture convention. I’ll be there July 26th through July 29th selling some of my artwork and jewelry.
To keep with the Asian theme, I grabbed a bunch of snacks from the local Asian grocery store.
Tons of photos and reviews coming up! I hope you’re as excited as I am.

Chocorooms Meiji

More Meiji goodness! My sister grabbed these at a Five Below of all places! Weird.

I had seen these around on the net and they are so freaking cute!

They are little cookie stems, which taste very similar to Pocky, and a fudgy milk chocolate topper. The topper doesn’t taste like Pocky chocolate, more like the Meiji Choco Baby chocolate.

These are super cute and very yummy. I highly recommend them!
